Sophos Day 2 – Mr. Abhrajit Sen Gupta, HR Business Partner, AstraZeneca Pharma India Ltd.


India’s pharma industry is expected to be among the top 3 in the world in terms of incremental growth, said Mr. Abhrajit Sen Gupta, HR Business Partner, AstraZeneca Pharma India Ltd. These words were spoken by him in TAPMI’s annual HR conclave “Disha2016” on the topic “Internet of people – Paradigm shift in Strategic HR Management and the Importance of Networking in Strengthening Workforce”.

He began by giving an overview of the Pharma Industry in India. India’s patient pool is expected to increase to over 20% in the next 10 years. The main segments in the Pharma industry are primary care, specialty and super specialty, with the latter two expected to grow significantly.

“Cross functional exposure is essential for a leader to make right decisions”, he said. To strengthen your strategy; you must have marketing excellence, sales force excellence and sound commercial operations. In the recruitment process, one must select a candidate by testing his ability to demonstrate what he is communicating, since, medical sales representative spend around 2-3 minutes in making a call to Heath care professionals. In this complex industry, HR professionals must be aware of the requirements in the industry to cater to the market.

Mr. Abhrajit spoke about what they look for in potential hires. Talent and capability to understand and execute the strategies of the company is imperative. Does that individual believe in the core values of the company and demonstrate his belief in science? Strategies must be communicated to the sales force regularly. Strong HR processes must partner with employees to increase their responsibilities, to bring them into a leadership role. Attitude of person is key to getting selected. He must show interest and knowledge in the sphere he would want to work in.

He explained the Impact of Technology on HRM. He said, talent is now available at a click of a button, Performance Management System has increased transparency, employees can manage their compensation and benefits with more flexibility and online training is easier to implement.

He concluded by talking about how social networking promotes competitiveness and enables in two-way communication with customers, hence gaining key insights about the market.
