Mr. U Vittal Mallya, Country Head – China, Larsen and Toubro Limited talks to students of TAPMI about doing business in China

Mr. U Vittal Mallya addressed the students of TAPMI on the nuances of doing business in China. Mr. Mallya got his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Manipal Institute of Technology in 1982 and MBA in International Business from IIFT in 1989. He has experience in various domains like Marketing, Supply chain management, Global sourcing and Strategic Sourcing. He is currently the Country Head- China of Larsen and Toubro Limited. Mr. Mallya  has been associated with the company’s operations in China for nine years since its inception.

He started off by giving a brief overview of Larsen and Toubro Limited and its operations in China. He explained, with supporting facts and figures, how the business and the political environment in China is totally different from that in India. He took us through the various phases of Infrastucture development that happened in China from mid 1990s till 2010. Mr. Mallya elaborated on various steps taken by the strong leadership of China in infrastucture and manufacturing sectors that enabled the country to mass produce goods at a very low cost and with very high efficiency. He also talked about the business culture in China and the importance the chinese people placed on hard work, honesty and commitment.  He said that the Chinese businessmen are tough negotiators and they always gave primary importance to the development of their country.

He concluded the guest lecture by speaking  about business opportunities and challenges in China in the services sector and the banking sector as the Chinese government have started making heavy investments in  these sectors.Image
